Why CPR?

Many of people will tell you CPR is important. We want to tell you why:

The chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest is substantially improved when an AED and CPR are immediately available. Combined with CPR, the use of an AED may increase the likelihood of survival by 75% or more.

What is cardiac arrest?

The word "cardiac" refers to the heart. The word "arrest" means stop. Sudden cardiac arrest is the sudden and unexpected loss of heart function in a person (i.e. the heart stops beating).

What is an AED?

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small, portable device used to identify cardiac rhythms and deliver a shock to correct abnormal electrical activity in the heart.

What does CPR do?

CPR restores blood flow to someone who is having cardiac arrest. Without proper blood flow, the brain and organs can be seriously damaged and the person can die within minutes if not treated immediately. CPR can help maintain blood flow and ventilation for a short period of time in a person experiencing cardiac arrest.
